The Trakcja Group engaged in the NordBalt energy project

Since April this year, works are performed on constructing a submarine 450-kilometer NordBalt transfer line connecting power systems of Lithuania and Sweden. Kauno Tiltai - a Trakcja Group company is performing a part of the project in Lithuania.

The scope of works in Lithuania foresees, amongst others, laying over 11 km of underground cable at the section from Kiskenai to Alksnyne near the Curonian Bay, as well as approx. 2 km at the bottom of the bay. According to initial estimations, by autumn this year half of the length of the NordBalt cable will laid down.

Investors of the NordBalt projects are operators of transfer systems in Lithuania and Sweden – Litgrid and Svenska Kraftnat. The investment is also co-financed with EU funds. The general contractor of the NordBalt energy bridge is the Swedish company ABB. The establishment of this energy connection will significantly contribute to strengthen the power safety of Lithuania by way of reducing its dependence on supplies of electric energy from Russia and Belorussia. It is assumed that thanks to the launching of the submarine cable, the flow of energy to Baltic countries will increase by one third. In turn, this means a drop in the prices of electric energy in Lithuania and levelling to the rates applicable in Scandinavia. The installation's transmission capacity is to reach 700MW.

The submarine transmission line is to be launched in spring 2015. The speed of conducted works will mainly depend on external factors, such as sea waving or weather conditions. Hence, the schedule of works was developed in such manner so that most tasks are performed during a period when storms are rare.

The construction of the NordBalt trans-border transmission line is simultaneously set within the assumptions of the EU power policy, aimed at integrating national electrical power systems of Member States, and creating common union energy market. The total cost of the investment will be approx. LTL 1.9 billion (PLN 2.3 billion).
