Night operation of installation of giant structure near Rzeszów

It only took three hours to transfer a gigantic bridge span and install it on two abutments of the railway viaduct that is currently under construction in Klęczany near Rzeszów. Despite its high degree of complexity, the operation was carried out very smoothly.

Trakcja PRKiI S.A. is the general contractor for the modernization of the Kraków – Rzeszów railway line, including the Sędziszów - Rzeszów Zachodni section. In addition to the comprehensive work on tracks and traction network, the company offer comprises a range of engineering tasks which include, among other things, the construction of the new railway viaduct over the National Road 4 in the town of Klęczany.

On the night of April 8th, 2015, within 3 hours only, the 230-tonne steel structure with a length of 63.6m, width of 7.67 and height of 4.5m was founded on two previously prepared abutments. For the operation we used a self-propelled tracked crane with lattice boom and a maximum lifting capacity of 600t. The crane was configured with a boom with a length of 48m, counterweight of 180t, central ballast of 60t and superlift ballast of 300t. Apart from the crane crew of two, the whole operation was performed by a team of only 12 men - riggers and a dogman - responsible for fixing, release and the coordination of the load movement during the transfer process.

This task was much more difficult than the previous one, because it required the structure to be lifted over the first span installed on the night of May 29the 2014, and the traction network built on it. The whole operation did not disrupt the railway traffic.
