Trakcja PRKiI - night-time works on embedding a span near Rzeszów

Establishing a 240-ton span on the new railway viaduct in Klęczany town at the Cracow-Rzeszów line took a little over 2.5 hours. On 29/30 May this year, Trakcja PRKiI, which is responsible for line modernization, embedded a span with the length of 63 m and width of 6.5 m on two supports, using a specialist crane.

The span was merged (welded) from 6 main elements and 17 cross bars next to the embankment during 10 days, and then it was secured against corrosion with protective paint at the joints. At the same time, two supports were constructed, at a distance of 62 m counting from the axis of suspension. Thanks to detailed preparations, which took almost a year, the assembly took much less than initially assumed. The works required closing the national road no. 4 running under the viaduct, and shutting off the traction network in the adjacent active track. However, this operation did not cause any difficulties in the railway traffic, because night-time breaks in train traffic were taken advantage of. The span was transported using a 48 m high crane with maximum load of 600 tons. Almost 15 employees and 5 engineers of Trakcja PRKiI participated in the assembly and supervision of works.

Apart from liquidating the local limitation of train speed, the new viaduct adjusted to the speed of 160 km/h will improve train traffic, because the horizontal clearance will increase to 15.3 m counting perpendicularly to the axis of the road. The construction of the viaduct also requires a correction of the railway line arch at the length of over 500 meters. The next operation of setting a span under the second track will be conducted in the first quarter of the next year.
