After 24 years, passenger traffic resumed at the Warszawa Główna station

After World War II, for almost 20 years, the station served as the main railway station in Warsaw and on 14 March 2021 it welcomed the first passengers after a long break in operation. The Warszawa Główna station will eventually take over regional travel from directions including Łódź Fabryczna, Skierniewice, Grodzisk Mazowiecki, Piaseczno, Dobieszyn, Łowicz, and Sochaczew, relieving the rest of the capital’s railway stations.

Despite minor inconveniences due to the pandemic, but also due to the fact that we received the decision on the building permit in July 2020, as well as despite temporary problems related to the design of proper water drainage, Trakcja, keeping a good pace of work, built:

  •  4.25 km of new tracks and
  • 6.5 km of new overhead contact line.

It did so using:

  •  25,500 tons of crushed stone;
  • 7,000 prestressed concrete sleepers;
  • 510 tons of rails;
  • 22 railroad switch sets; and
  • 14,000 sets of SB-7 fasteners (spring clips).

The commissioning of the two 350-meters long platforms does not mean that all work has been completed. Trakcja will continue work on the construction of a pedestrian bridge to connect Jerozolimskie Avenue with Kolejowa Street, reducing the time it takes to walk from Ochota to Wola. The bridge, whose steel structure will weigh nearly 260 tons, is scheduled for completion around July this year.
